I’ve been working in the networking and security arena for about 20 years. Today I read one of the most bizarre pieces of mass media journalism on the topic: “US Army warns of Twitter danger” on, of all places, the BBC site.
If you are not familiar with Twitter, you could start with this post over at Business Tech Feed: Business Twitter. It is a short-form (140 characters or less) micro-blogging service where anyone can post updates that are (usually) visible to the world. Its uses range from day to day chatter to electricity usage monitoring (see Electricity is a Network Problem).
If terrorists wanted to put their activities in plain site, it certainly is the place to do it. The service wouldn’t even meet the most basic of enterprise security requirements, which is why there are enterprise alternatives (see this post on ESME).
