It has been a while since a big site was hurt by a Denial of Service attack (DoS - although actually usually distributed denial of service attacks these days). However there was a hit this week on Wordpress.com, home to Automattic Inc’s hosted blog service based on the WordPress opensource blogging platform.
The Blog Herald picks up the story, pointing to Barry’s post with the stats. It looks like some hackers had a beef with one of the blogs they were hosting and directed .5/Gig of traffic at it, blocking access to one of Automattic’s four data centres.
It is worth remembering that no Internet presence is immune to these things. If you are responsible for an on-line presence, ensure that good monitoring is in place, and that you are sure of the contact details for upstream service providers, so you can work together to mitigate an attack and keep your services up. Sobering stuff.
