Cloud provider Joyent is building out their infrastructure to support growing demand for cloud computing services (for more on that topic see longer posts here). Their Tier 1 internet connectivity is now managed by f5 BigIP load-balancers (handling 2-10Gbps of traffic) with Force10 switches providing the Ethernet infrastructure. More proof that it might be time to think about 100Gig.
“Cloud computing is now a proven, highly scalable, and cost-effective way for companies to increase agility and accelerate innovation while limiting risk and cost,” said Jason Needham, Sr. Director of Product Management at F5. “However, the infrastructure required to provide cloud computing has to be capable of massive, unpredictable on-demand throughput…”
Flexible (even “elastic”) computing and network services and being accelerated into the mainstream by current economic uncertainty. Services like Joyent’s mean that computing services (At least hosting and processing) can be purchased on an “as needed” basis. Joyent already provides services to web darlings LinkedIn as well as a large number of other web app providers.
